Five Guys Martin Place marks the fifth Australian store, bringing the brand’s iconic American burger experience to the heart of Sydney. The store forms part of the Sydney Metro Martin Place integrated station precinct, which includes the new metro station, two new commercial towers, retail spaces, and extensive underground pedestrian connections. Conveniently located at 39 Martin Place, directly above the station, the restaurant is perfectly positioned to serve both commuters and local professionals.
Pedestrians and commuters can access the venue through two station entrances: A northern plaza opening onto Castlereagh, Hunter, and Elizabeth Streets, and a southern plaza linking Martin Place with Castlereagh Street. This prime location ensures Five Guys is not only a quick stop for those on the move but also a lasting fixture in one of Sydney’s busiest business districts.
The Martin Place opening builds on a remarkable family story that began nearly four decades ago. Five Guys is a family-run burger and fries restaurant serving a crave-worthy menu made fresh from scratch. Since 1986, the brand has been a Washington, D.C. favourite, ever since Jerry and Janie Murrell gave their three sons a simple choice: “Start a business or go to college.” The business route won, and the Murrells opened their first carry-out burger joint in Arlington, Virginia. Under Jerry and Janie’s guidance, the small eatery quickly developed a cult-like following.
Throughout the 1980s and 1990s, the Murrells perfected their straightforward concept. Five Guys became the go-to place for a fresh, juicy burger with all the toppings you could fit between two freshly baked buns. As the family grew, two more brothers joined the business, and together they expanded the brand. In early 2003, Jerry and Janie, along with their five sons the original “Five Guys” began offering franchise opportunities. The response was extraordinary: in less than 18 months, more than 300 units had been sold.
Decades after redefining the burger landscape in the U.S., Five Guys has made its way across the globe and now into Australia, with Martin Place as its latest milestone.
Inside, the design stays true to Five Guys’ distinctive global identity. Guests are greeted by the brand’s signature white-and-red checkerboard patterned feature wall tiles, complemented by bold red benchtops. Warm timber accents soften the look, while the walls are lined with the brand’s iconic magazine clippings and poster-style artworks, celebrating Five Guys’ history and reputation. The interior is deliberately simple yet instantly recognisable, ensuring the focus remains on what matters most the food.
“Martin Place Metro offers us this in more ways than one catering to the ‘grab-and-go’ customer rushing to or from the metro or trains, as well as serving as a permanent fixture and premium offering to the thousands of people who work in Martin Place and its surrounds,” said Phil Keelan, Head of Operations Nationwide.
