Questions and Answers
What was the initial vision for the Hazel project, and how has it evolved since its inception?
The initial vision for Hazel was to imbed some of the deep historic storey of the original cottage located in the Hazelhurst gardens. The cottage is a beautiful art deco cottage rich with history, and we wanted to bring some of these art deco elements into the adjacent building, as there was no correlation between the two. In doing so, the project evolved into a much more elegant venue than we were originally planing. Hazel is a cafe, and restaurant but also a weeding venue and function space, so the design developed with that in mind and the finished result evolved into space that was suitable for all occasions.
Can you describe the architectural style of Hazel and any unique design elements that set it apart from other hospitality projects?
Hazel has an art deco inspired interior with a modern and calming atmosphere. We pulled in some of the art deco elements found in the original cottage located in the garden of hazelhurst. The elements we took inspiration from include the glass bricks that we have used as wall divide in the entry and the bar area of hazel, as well of the beautiful exterior facade of the cottage featuring a lovely arched details, you can see this detail brought over into the joinery of the kitchen and the bar.
How does Hazel aim to contribute to the local community in Gymea, Sydney, and what has been the community’s response so far?
Hazel is located in the Hazelhurst art Centre, the arts centre was the first of its kind in Australia and the property was donated to the community from the original owners, they donated it with the hopes that it would because the cultural hub of the area and promote art and community. Hazel, is located in the middle of the building, set between the two galleries and is the perfect meeting place for guests to enjoy prior to or after a day in the gallery. Also a wedding venue and function space for the community Hazel offers a beautiful and elegant backdrop for guests to enjoy their special day. The community response to Hazel has been overwhelmingly positive, with many saying the space now feels larger and more inviting than it previously was.
What sustainable practices have been implemented in the construction and operation of Hazel, and why were these important to the project team?
We have opted for all Australian made and locally manufactured furniture for the interiors of Hazel, all of the furniture was manufactured by Contempo and Co located in Sydney. With all of the different offerings of Hazel being a cafe, restaurant and wedding venue, we needed the furniture to be durable as a large portion of it needs to be packed away ready to seat a wedding party of 100 guests. Using quality furniture that is Australian made means less imports and also lowers the need for redoing the furniture as it will last a lot longer than cheaply imported products.
