Ranee’s, Bang Na, Bangkok – Thailand

Project description

Located on the ground floor of The Glass, a mixed-use community complex in the rapidly developing Bang Na district of Bangkok, Ranee’s is a restaurant that reflects a deep commitment to craftsmanship, materiality, and spatial experience. As Bang Na transforms into a denser, more interconnected urban area — with a growing population now exceeding 100,000 people — this project responds to the need for thoughtful, engaging public spaces.
Ranee’s is a homemade pizza brand that emphasizes quality and authenticity. Every element, from pizza to pasta, is crafted in-house with attention to detail and ingredient integrity. This philosophy extends into the spatial design, where the goal was to create a restaurant experience that feels immersive, unique, and removed from the outside world.
The design concept centers on building a new inner world within a glass box. By layering an internal volume within the existing rectangular glass structure, the restaurant creates a sense of enclosure and discovery. Visitors encounter varied seating arrangements that foster comfort, choice, and a sense of refuge — an intentional contrast to the bustling city outside.
Inspired by the spatial hierarchy of ecclesiastical architecture — particularly the emphasis on the central hall — the interior is defined by over 80,000 modular glass blocks. These are constructed using threaded rebar and steel plates that act as both structural and decorative elements. Perforated steel panels, designed with geometric motifs derived from Roman forms, double as windows and support structures.
The resin-based glass blocks are sized to resemble traditional ancient bricks, bringing a tactile sense of history and proportion into the modern space. The dry construction method, involving rebar threading, allows the components to be disassembled and reused, aligning with sustainable building principles.
Material choices blend traditional and contemporary sensibilities. Locally sourced elements like steel components, glass blocks, and recycled tile fragments ground the project in its context. Inside, contemporary furnishings provide contrast, while strands of pasta are playfully suspended in the central volume — softening the space and adding a light, whimsical energy that offsets the heavy structure.
Ranee’s at The Glass is not just a restaurant — it is a spatial experience. It reflects a commitment to craft, a respect for context, and a belief that good design can elevate the everyday.
